Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter occurred on the 24th of August on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her mother the time she needed during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art, and theatre. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an avenue for action. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay, who grew up with her family in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was still at university. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage inside the house that belonged to a member on the jury. After being disappointed in journalism by the tasks she was handed she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. In 1999, she founded her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, the agency has created lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Beauty Collective.
